WHITE TWP. | A new home is in the works for the Warren County Special Services School District.

County Freeholder Richard Gardner proposed Wednesday moving the district to a vacant building behind the county's health department in Mansfield Township. Warren County Technical School is looking to reclaim office space being used by the district.

The vacant building is two stories and 1,250 square feet and was refurbished last year, Gardner said. The freeholders are expected to consider taking formal action at their next meeting.

"This would fit their needs appropriately," Gardner said. "It's a benefit in both ways for special services and the vo-tech so they can plan accordingly."

The technical school has eyed the district's offices for its new child development program, which kicks off in September with 14 freshman students, said Robert F. Glowacky, chief school administrator at the technical school. By the second year, the district hopes residents will drop off their children for day care services there, he said.

"We envision that to become a high-profile program on our campus," Glowacky said. "It's all about the kids."

The special services district lease runs until the end of the upcoming school year and would be given ample time to move, Glowacky said. The district leases the space for $25,000 a year, he said.

"Whenever they're ready, that's fine," he said. "We're not throwing anyone out to the streets."

Special services district Superintendent Regina Swierc previously expressed concern over the $46,000 in tuition costs owed to the technical school in the coming school year. Swierc did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday night.

Like any other district in the county, special services is charged about $2,100 annually for each student it sends to the technical school, Glowacky said.

"We need that money to operate," he said.
